Publication – This Healing Heath
In the west of Norfolk lies a shallow valley where, until World War Two, the chalk and sand were never ploughed. For seven subsequent decades, unprofitable crops were grown here, until Massingham Heath was inherited by a visionary.
Nine hundred acres of the heath have since been given back to nature, sown with hand-gathered wildflower seeds from local sites. The rest of the estate is in regenerative agriculture.
Wild species have flooded back, filling this little valley with the ceaseless song of skylarks, the dappled wings of moths and butterflies, the golds and pinks and blues of countless flowers.
From 2025 to 2026, more than thirty members of the Society of Wildlife Artists visited Massingham Heath, to document the land’s astonishing recovery. Their work is presented as This Healing Heath.
This Healing Heath is a supremely beautiful portrait of place by a peerless collective. The story it tells, of a landscape resurgent rather than one we are losing, elevates it to a work of transcendental joy.
