Amie Haslen
Amie is a painter and printmaker based in the heart of Suffolk. She draws inspiration from the land, in particular her garden, nearby wildflower meadows/verges and woodland. As well as depicting the larger landscape, its smaller inhabitants are a constant source of inspiration — from butterflies and moths, to bees and bugs! Amie makes sketches on location using them as reference when developing finished works in the studio. Capturing the vitality of the place and showing the interaction between insects and plants is pivotal to Amie. Being outside and observing the insects as they weave through the sculptural plants and flowers brings great joy, as does working in a landscape that she knows well and loves dearly.
Amie was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by artists, with the family business being The Wildlife Art Gallery in Lavenham, alongside picture framing at home. She has experienced the pleasures and pressures of running a gallery. During this time, she got to know many SWLA members, admiring their work, careers and way of life as wildlife artists. She studied fine art at Aberystwyth university, specialising in printmaking. Since graduating in 2013, Amie has developed her working methods, painting mostly in acrylics, and creating lino and woodblock prints. She builds up layers of colour to create expressive images. Amie worked in the gallery until it closed in 2016 but continues to be a picture framer for local artists. She exhibits her own work in a selection of galleries and exhibitions in East Anglia and further afield. In 2023 Amie had paintings selected for The Natural Eye exhibition and was elected to an Associate Member of the SWLA in 2024, when she was also awarded the Trymwood prize for her work on meadows.
