Fiona was born in Lancashire into a creative family whose mother painted and had her own pottery. A love of animals and the countryside inspired early portraits in pastel and landscape drawings. From the age of thirteen she knew she wanted to go to art college.
Fiona has lived in Cumbria since 1994.She was elected a member of The Lake Artists Society in 2006; elected an associate of the S.W.L.A in 2012 and made a full member in 2013.
“The landscape, wildlife and flora of wild places together with the constantly changing light and weather are my inspiration. To paint out in the landscape is a wonderful way to connect with nature. It can be totally absorbing. I want my work to convey the atmosphere and the sense of wonder that these places give me.”
Inspiration and Method
Inspiration is close at hand in our own garden, a haven for plants and creatures. The beautiful countryside around us at the head of Morecambe Bay also provides an unusual range of landscape and wildlife habitats. However, I do make one intensive painting trip to Scotland every year.
In my work I try to portray wildlife, plantlife and human life as connected and inseparable. Through my art I hope that those who look at my work come away with an understanding of the interconnection of all life.
Out in the field I tend to sketch using graphite and water soluble pencils, watercolour and or gouache on heavy watercolour paper. I work quickly to catch the fleeting wildlife and transient elements. Back in the studio I make larger graphite drawings which recently I have started tinting with touches of soft coloured pastel. My paintings are created using a process of building up different surfaces and textures with impasto and sometimes printing. Often the paintings evolve using many glazes and thin transparent washes of colour.
